(from Flavours of France (UK): The influence of the Roman empire can be seen almost everywhere, in Rhone Alps, however particularly so in Lyon and Vienne which were the main cities at the time. This region is characterised by dramatic mountains, some snow capped all year round, superb lakes and alpine meadows. Anywhere you go in RHONE ALPS the food, the wine and the cheese are all outstanding. Lyon is in fact considered to be the gastronomic capital of France not only because it is the home town of several stars of French cuisine but also the location of France’s School of Culinary Art, where PAUL BOCUSE is the President. We also visit Annecy where we meet an artisan making TAVEILLONS, the wooden tiles seen throughout the district on the roofs of chalets and alpine huts. To follow we are going to see another artisan at work – in the kitchen – with sugar. In RHONE ALPS, the best known cheeses include BEAUFORT, known as the Prince of Grurers made in the high mountain valleys; and also Rebiochon, an ancient cheese known since the fourteenth century. Mountain cheese is a feature of this show.
