Coonawarra

South Australia’s most famous wine area, but its most isolated, is Coonawarra, a small cigar shaped strip of terra rossa soil which produces wines which are always among Australia’s finest. Although Shiraz was the only wine grape grown in Coonawarra between 1900 and 1950, today the district produces most of Australia’s great Cabernet Sauvignon; and although over-shadowed by its big red brother, the outstanding quality of Coonawarra white wine also receives worldwide adulation. Outstanding, producers include Doug Bowen Wines, Rymil, Di Giorgio Family Wines and Penley Estates.
