(from Flavours of France (UK):

Avignon is rich in monuments, art and architecture, and stages an annual festival of theatre, dance and music. It all began when the French Pope Clement V moved the Papal seat from Rome to Avignon in 1309. Subsequently the town was transformed with splendid palaces, elegant residences and monuments. Undoubtedly the most outstanding example of this era which has remained intact is the Pope’s palace itself. This is a feature of this show.

It was Louis XIV who brought the truffle back into vogue in the 17th century. There is a feature on this delicious subterrain fungus and a great recipe in this show.

Folk dancing is particularly popular throughout all of Provence where there are many excellent groups like La Restanco who perform “Le Pas Greque” in costume.

The wines from the bottom of the Rhone Valley are considered to be of outstanding quality, particularly so those from the Chateau Neuf du Pape estates, once the vineyards of the Popes of Avignon. That’s another feature of this show.
